You are a Teacher or Staff Member and have videos that you only want to make available to particular groups of people. You want to make use of Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Stream to do this. You also want to be able to manage your videos over time; changing the teams who have permission each term, semester, or maybe yearly.


Solution:

  • You can upload a video to Stream and link it to specific Channels in Teams.
  • You can add a custom Tab in Teams that is specifically linked to a Channel. 


Steps:

Uploading Videos and setting Permissions

  • Create your video and have it ready to upload from your laptop.



  • Take a note of the name(s) of the Team(s) that you want to make the video accessible. 





  • Browse for video on your laptop (or drag & drop) and click Open. The video will begin uploading.


  • Choose Permissions then choose My groups in the “Share with” list.



  • Type part-of your Class name in the box (e.g. “2020 DST”) then click the magnifying glass. Your Class(es) will appear. Click Create a channel under your Class.



  • Give your channel a name and click Create. You will use this channel later to link the video to a custom Tab in your chosen Teams. 
  • Repeat assigning your video to other Classes and Channels that you with.



  • In Permissions you will now see that your video is visible to each of the Classes in the respective Channels. Check the Permissions are correct and then click Publish. Students in your chosen Classes can now access your video.


  • Note: you can return to the Permissions at any time in the future to change which Teams have access to your video.


  • Once your videos are uploaded in Stream, students can access them in Stream by going to Discover, then Groups, then the Class name (e.g. “2020 DST Metal Guitar Unit 1_2”). They can find your video under Videos or Channels.



Adding a custom "Stream" Tab to your Class in Teams

To allow Students to find your videos easily, you can add a custom Tab in your Team that links to a specific Stream Channel.

  • Go to your Class in Teams. Click the “+” and choose “Stream”.


 

  • Enter the Channel name that you created in Stream. When Teams can locate the channel, it will show below, and you can choose it. Click Save.

  • Videos now appear in the Team's Tab for Students to access easily.
